# YouTube thumbnail downloader and preview tester

Paste a YouTube link or video ID and get every thumbnail the video has, from the 1280 × 720 HD image (maxresdefault.jpg) down to 120 × 90, each with a download button. Then add your own thumbnail and see it in the home feed, search results, the sidebar and on a phone, in light and dark mode.

Free tool
Runs in your browser. **Your image is never uploaded, stored or logged.** Grabbing a thumbnail loads it straight from YouTube’s image server, the same way any YouTube page does.

To download a YouTube thumbnail, paste the video’s link above and press **Get thumbnails**. Every thumbnail sits at a public address on YouTube’s image server, `https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg`, so this grabber builds those addresses from the video ID, checks which sizes really exist and gives you a download button for each. The largest is 1280 × 720. Older and low-resolution videos often don’t have it, and the tool says so instead of handing you YouTube’s grey placeholder.

## How to download a YouTube thumbnail

Copy the video’s link, paste it into the box, then press Download on the size you want. In order:

- **Copy the link.** Use Share, then Copy link, or copy it from the address bar. Watch links, youtu.be short links, Shorts, embeds, live streams, m.youtube.com and YouTube Music links all work, with or without extra bits like `?si=` or `&t=`. A bare 11-character video ID works too.

- **Press Get thumbnails.** The tool loads each size and checks its real pixel size, so a size the video doesn’t have shows as missing.

- **Download or copy.** JPG files save straight to your device. The WebP copies open in a new tab, where you right-click and choose Save image as: YouTube’s image server doesn’t allow a web page to download its WebP files directly, so no button can do it for you.

You can also do it by hand. The video ID is the 11 characters after `v=` in a watch link, or after `youtu.be/` or `/shorts/`. Put it into `https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg`, open that in a new tab and save the image.

## YouTube thumbnail sizes and their URLs

A YouTube video has up to five thumbnail sizes, from 120 × 90 to 1280 × 720. The names and pixel sizes below are the ones YouTube documents for its [Data API thumbnails](https://developers.google.com/youtube/v3/docs/thumbnails) (read in October 2026), which says the two largest are only “available for some videos”.

File Size API name Notes

`maxresdefault.jpg` 1280 × 720 maxres Only for some videos. 16:9.

`sddefault.jpg` 640 × 480 standard Only for some videos. 4:3, so a 16:9 video gets black bars top and bottom.

`hqdefault.jpg` 480 × 360 high 4:3, black bars on a 16:9 video.

`mqdefault.jpg` 320 × 180 medium 16:9, no bars.

`default.jpg` 120 × 90 default 4:3.

Each file lives at `https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/` followed by the file name. WebP copies of the same five sit at `https://i.ytimg.com/vi_webp/VIDEO_ID/` with `.webp` on the end, and `img.youtube.com` serves the same JPG files as `i.ytimg.com`.

Two more files exist that YouTube doesn’t document: `hq720.jpg`, which was 1280 × 720 whenever it existed, and `oar2.jpg`, which keeps the video’s own shape and varies in size. On the Shorts we checked it was a 1080 × 1920 vertical frame, and on regular videos it was anything from 1920 × 1080 down to 320 × 240. They’re handy, but unofficial, so they could change without notice.

When a size doesn’t exist, YouTube answers with an HTTP 404 and a 120 × 90 grey placeholder image, which is why a plain link can look like it worked. YouTube’s first video, “Me at the zoo” from 2005, has no maxres or standard thumbnail at all. The grabber checks the pixel size of every file and greys out the placeholders.

## YouTube thumbnail size requirements for uploads

YouTube recommends uploading a custom thumbnail at 3840 × 2160 pixels in a 16:9 shape, at least 640 pixels wide, as a JPG or PNG. Here is everything its [custom thumbnails help page](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/72431) says, as of October 2026:

- **Resolution:** 3840 × 2160 for videos and 2160 × 3840 for Shorts, with a minimum width of 640 pixels for videos and a minimum height of 640 pixels for Shorts.

- **Shape:** 16:9 for videos, 9:16 for Shorts, and 1:1 for podcast playlists.

- **Format:** “image formats such as JPG or PNG”.

- **File size:** it depends on where you upload from. 2 MB for a video thumbnail from a phone (10 MB for podcasts), and 50 MB from a computer.

- **Who can:** your account must be verified to upload custom thumbnails, and YouTube can stop you for the day with a “Daily custom thumbnail limit reached” message, a limit it says can vary by country or region and channel history.

Many guides still quote 1280 × 720 and a flat 2 MB. YouTube’s own page says what’s above, so go by that. The tester above flags an image under 1280 × 720 for a different reason: that is the largest size YouTube serves a thumbnail at, so anything smaller is stretched on a big screen. If your image isn’t 16:9, YouTube’s API documentation says it is resized without changing its shape and may get black bars. The [aspect ratio calculator](https://hermoso.ai/tools/aspect-ratio-calculator/) works out the exact 16:9 size for any width.

## How to test a YouTube thumbnail before publishing

Add your image in step 2 above and type the title and channel name you’ll use. The preview draws your thumbnail at the size YouTube shows it in the home feed, search results, the suggested videos beside the player and the phone feed, with the time stamp in the corner, in light or dark mode. Grab a competitor’s video in step 1 and tick the compare box to see yours next to theirs.

We measured these sizes on youtube.com on 6 October 2026, signed out and in English. The grid size comes from a channel’s Videos tab, which uses the same grid as the home feed (the signed-out home page shows no videos to measure).

Where 1280 px wide window 1920 px wide window

Home feed grid 347 × 195 420 × 236

Search results 500 × 281 500 × 281

Suggested videos beside the player 240 × 135 359 × 202

Phone feed (390 px wide phone) 390 × 219, the full width of the screen

YouTube changes its layout with the window size, and over time, so treat these as a snapshot rather than a spec. What to look for:

- **The smallest size.** If the words on your thumbnail can’t be read at 240 × 135 in the sidebar, there are too many of them.

- **The bottom-right corner.** YouTube puts the video length there, in a dark box 20 pixels tall, 8 pixels in from the corner. On the small sidebar thumbnail that box covers a much bigger share of the picture than on the big grid. The tester warns when something detailed sits under it.

- **Dark mode.** A thumbnail with a black or white edge can melt into the page in one of the two themes.

- **The title next to it.** The thumbnail and title are read together, so check the title’s length too in the [YouTube title checker](https://hermoso.ai/tools/youtube-title-checker/).

## YouTube Shorts thumbnails

For a Short, you can pick a frame from the video as its thumbnail in the YouTube app, or upload your own image, but only in YouTube Studio on a computer. YouTube Help covers the two separately: [choosing a frame](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/10343433?co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid) works in the app and not in Studio, while [custom Shorts thumbnails](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/72431) are “currently only available to add in YouTube Studio on a computer”, at 9:16, ideally 2160 × 3840 and at least 640 pixels tall.

The same help page adds one thing worth knowing: if a vertical video has a 16:9 custom thumbnail, YouTube replaces it with an auto-generated 4:5 thumbnail on the home, explore and subscription pages. Your thumbnail still shows on the watch feed, in watch history and on non-mobile platforms.

The grabber works on Shorts links too. A Short has the same five sizes, and on the Shorts we checked they were horizontal, with the vertical frame in the middle and blurred sides. For the vertical frame itself, use `oar2.jpg` at the end of the list. To check what the Shorts buttons and caption cover on a vertical image, use the [safe zone checker](https://hermoso.ai/tools/safe-zone-checker/).

## Who owns a YouTube thumbnail?

The creator who made it. Saving a thumbnail to study it, keep it on a mood board or compare it with your own in the preview above is normal research. Putting someone else’s thumbnail, or a close copy of it, on your own video, ad or post is using their work, so ask them first. And the thumbnails you upload yourself have to follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines like the video does.

## Make thumbnails for your own videos

Hermoso is marketing on autopilot: it researches what already works in your market, makes the creative, schedules the posts, runs ads on your own accounts and reads the numbers back. For YouTube, it makes thumbnails and Shorts covers for your own videos in your brand’s look, sets the thumbnail on your video and publishes to your channel once you [connect YouTube](https://hermoso.ai/channels/youtube/), and plans uploads with the [YouTube scheduler](https://hermoso.ai/youtube-scheduler/). [Try it in the app](https://app.hermoso.ai/tools/thumbnail-maker?src=tool-youtube-thumbnail-downloader), or use it inside Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor through its [MCP server](https://hermoso.ai/mcp/).

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I download a YouTube thumbnail in HD?

Paste the video link into the downloader and press Download next to maxresdefault.jpg, which is 1280 × 720. If that size is greyed out, the video has no HD thumbnail, and the best you can get is sddefault.jpg (640 × 480) or hqdefault.jpg (480 × 360), both 4:3 with black bars on a 16:9 video.

### What is the URL of a YouTube thumbnail?

https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg, where VIDEO_ID is the 11 characters after v= in the watch link. Swap maxresdefault for sddefault, hqdefault, mqdefault or default to get the smaller sizes.

### Why is maxresdefault.jpg missing or a small grey image?

YouTube only makes the 1280 × 720 and 640 × 480 thumbnails for some videos, usually ones uploaded in HD. When a size doesn’t exist, the address answers with an HTTP 404 and a 120 × 90 grey placeholder. The grabber checks each file’s real pixel size and greys out the placeholders.

### What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?

YouTube Help recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels in 16:9 for a video, at least 640 pixels wide, as a JPG or PNG. The file limit is 2 MB when you upload from a phone and 50 MB from a computer. For a Short it recommends 2160 × 3840 in 9:16.

### How can I preview my thumbnail before I upload it?

Add your image in the preview tester on this page, type your title and channel name, and it shows the thumbnail at the sizes YouTube uses in the home grid, search, the suggested sidebar and the phone feed, in light and dark mode, with the time stamp in the corner. You can put a competitor’s thumbnail next to it.

### Can I get the thumbnail of a YouTube Short?

Yes. Paste the /shorts/ link. The five standard sizes are horizontal on the Shorts we checked, so use oar2.jpg at the end of the list for the vertical frame. YouTube doesn’t document that file, so it could change.

### Can I use a thumbnail I downloaded?

For reference, research and inspiration, yes. The thumbnail belongs to the creator who made it, so ask before you put it, or a close copy, on your own video, ad or post.

### Is my image uploaded?

No. The thumbnail you preview is read by your browser and drawn on this page. Nothing is sent or stored, so reloading the page clears it. The only requests this tool makes are to YouTube’s own image server, when you grab a video’s thumbnails.
