Comment-to-DM is one of the simplest growth loops on Instagram: you post something useful, ask people to comment a word, and send each of them the thing in a direct message. How does comment to DM work?
- Connect your Instagram professional account in Hermoso, through Instagram directly or through the Facebook Page it is linked to.
- Write a rule. Pick the trigger (a comment on one post, on your next post, or on any post, or a DM containing a keyword), the keyword, and the DM people receive.
- Add a link button if you like. Up to three buttons, each opening your page, your guide or your store. They arrive as real tappable buttons inside the DM, not a pasted URL.
- Optionally reply in public too. A short line under the comment, such as “Sent! Check your DMs”, rotated across a few variants so it never reads like a bot.
From then on, Instagram tells Hermoso the moment a comment or DM arrives, Hermoso checks it against your rules, and the reply goes out from your own account. Nobody has to be online.
What can trigger a DM?
- A comment with your keyword on one specific post, the classic “comment GUIDE” post.
- A comment on your next post or reel. Set the rule before you publish and it attaches itself to the first post that goes up after it, so “DM everyone who comments LINK on my next reel” works as written.
- A comment on any post, with or without a keyword.
- A DM containing a keyword, such as PRICE or MENU, answered with your price list or menu while a human is still free to take the conversation from there.
Keywords ignore capitals, punctuation and accents, and they match whole words: GUIDE fires on “guide please!” and does not fire on “guidebook”.
Will it spam people or double-send?
No, and this is the part that is easy to get wrong. Each person gets a rule’s DM once per post, so a second “guide” from the same person is skipped and logged as skipped. Instagram retries its notifications, and Hermoso records every comment it has answered before sending, so a retry never becomes a second message. Your own comments and replies are never answered, which is what stops a public reply from triggering itself. A DM keyword answers one person at most once a day by default.
It also follows Instagram’s own rules rather than working around them: a private reply goes to a comment once and within seven days of it, Hermoso stays under Instagram’s hourly limit for private replies, and messages use Meta’s official Instagram messaging API with your account’s own connection. If that connection stops working, the rules for that account switch off and say why, instead of failing silently on every comment.
Can I test a rule before it goes live?
Yes, two ways. Test takes a sample comment, tells you whether it matches and shows the exact DM it would send. Dry run lets a rule watch real comments and record what it would have sent, without sending anything, so you can watch a launch post for an hour before switching it on.
Every reply is on the record
The Automations tab shows each rule with what it has sent, skipped and failed, plus a running log: who commented, what they wrote, which rule answered, and what happened. When a DM does not go out, the log says why in plain words, for example that the person’s comment already had a reply.

Is Instagram DM automation allowed by Instagram?
Yes, when it runs on Meta's official APIs, which Hermoso does. Replies use the Instagram messaging API and its Private Replies feature with your own connected account, follow Meta's limits (one private reply per comment, within seven days of the comment), and stay under Instagram's hourly rate limit.
Which Instagram accounts can use it?

Can the DM include a link button?
