What the viewer pulls

It works two ways. Paste a board link, such as pinterest.com/ikeausa/small-space-living, and the Hermoso Studio reads the pins on that board, shows each one as a card with its image and description, and lists them with how many times each was saved. Type a username instead, such as ikeausa, and you get the account's boards, each with its cover and description, so you can pick the one to open next.

Most brands organise their Pinterest by room, season, use or product line, so the list of boards alone tells you how a brand thinks its customers shop.

Ways marketers use it

• Learning how a category is pinned. Open the board a big brand keeps for your category and read ten pin descriptions in a row. You will see the words they use, the problems they name and how long they write.
• Planning your own boards. A competitor's board list is a ready-made map of the topics their customers search for. Use it to check your own boards cover the same ground.
• Finding image styles that fit. Pins that show a product in a real room or in use look very different from plain product shots. Lining them up on one screen shows which style a brand leans on.

How to read the pins

Start with the descriptions. Pinterest works like a search engine, so a good description names the thing, the problem it solves and the place it goes, in plain words people type. The best ones read like an answer to a search.

Then look at text on the images. Pins with a short headline on the picture, like "a studio apartment with space for it all", are built to be found and saved. Ask the Studio which pins use that pattern and what they say.

Limits to know

The viewer reads public boards and accounts. Secret boards cannot be viewed. It shows a board's pins and an account's boards as Pinterest lists them now, and it does not show how a board grew over time.
