AI advertising glossary

The vocabulary of modern ad creation — ad spy, hook rate, ROAS, UGC, brand grounding, finished ads — defined in plain English, each linked to a deeper guide.

Advertising picked up a new vocabulary as AI moved into the creative process — some of it borrowed from performance marketing, some of it brand new. This glossary defines 30 terms you will meet when you research, generate, and run ads with a tool like Hermoso. Each entry is short, honest, and links out to a deeper guide where one exists. Jump to a term or read straight through.

Ad library

An ad library is a public, searchable archive of the ads a brand is running or has run on a platform — Meta, Google, LinkedIn, and TikTok each maintain one. Because entries show roughly when an ad started and whether it is still live, ad libraries are the raw material for competitive research. Hermoso queries them directly; see the ad spy tool and our Meta Ad Library guide.

Ad run length

Ad run length is how long a given ad has been live. It is one of the most honest performance signals available from the outside: brands quietly kill ads that lose money, so an ad running for months is almost certainly profitable. Sorting a competitor’s library by longest-running surfaces proven winners. More in why run length is a signal and the ad spy tool.

Ad spy

Ad spy is the practice of studying competitors’ live ads — their hooks, formats, offers, and how long each has run — to learn what is working before you spend. It is legal and standard: the creative is public. Hermoso builds it in, ranking rivals’ ads by persistence. See the ad spy tool and competitor ad research.

AI avatar

An AI avatar is a synthetic on-camera presenter — a realistic person, generated by AI, who can deliver a script to camera. Reusable, identity-locked avatars keep the same face across many ads, which is what makes them viable for UGC-style testimonials at volume. Hermoso’s avatars ship with lip-sync built in. See the AI avatar generator and our Arcads alternative.

Angle

An angle is the specific argument an ad makes for a product — the problem it leads with, the benefit it promises, or the audience it speaks to. One product supports many angles (save time, save money, status, fear of missing out), and testing angles usually moves results more than restyling a single one. See the AI ad copy generator and UGC ads that convert.

Aspect ratio

Aspect ratio is the width-to-height shape of an ad. 9:16 (vertical) fills phone screens for Stories, Reels, and TikTok; 1:1 (square) suits feeds; 16:9 (landscape) fits YouTube and desktop. Running the wrong ratio for a placement wastes screen space and attention, so most campaigns need several. Hermoso renders each natively — see the TikTok ad generator and Instagram ad generator.

Brand grounding

Brand grounding is the step that keeps AI-generated creative faithful to a real brand — feeding the model your actual product, logo, colors, and voice so the output looks like your ad, not a generic stock render. Without it, AI ads drift into plausible-but-wrong products and garbled logos. Hermoso builds a brand profile from your site or a handle; see AI product photos and AI image ads.

Creative fatigue

Creative fatigue is the decline in an ad’s performance as its audience sees it too many times — click-through drops, cost per result climbs. The fix is a steady supply of fresh creative, not a bigger budget on a tired ad. This is why iteration speed matters so much. Refresh faster with the AI video ad maker, informed by competitor research.

Credit-based pricing

Credit-based pricing charges per unit of generation — each image or video render costs a set number of credits — rather than gating features behind subscription tiers. Its advantage is transparency: you see a render’s exact cost before you spend, and pay for output, not seats. Hermoso prices this way, with every feature on every plan. See pricing and the buyer’s guide.

CTA (call to action)

A CTA (call to action) is the instruction an ad gives the viewer — “Shop now,” “Learn more,” “Get the app.” It sets the click’s intent and is often a button plus a line of copy. A clear, specific CTA that matches the landing page reliably outperforms a vague one. Hermoso can bake copy and a CTA into the render — see the AI ad copy generator.

CTR (click-through rate)

CTR (click-through rate) is the share of people who click an ad after seeing it — clicks divided by impressions. It measures how compelling the creative and offer are at driving action, and is one of the first diagnostics for whether an ad is landing. Weak CTR usually points at the hook or the offer, not the budget. Strengthen it with the AI ad copy generator.

Dynamic creative (DCO)

Dynamic creative (or DCO, dynamic creative optimization) lets the ad platform mix and match supplied assets — images, videos, headlines, CTAs — and automatically serve the best-performing combinations per user. It rewards having many creative variations on hand, and producing that volume by hand is the bottleneck AI generation removes. Feed it variations from the AI Facebook ad generator and video ad maker.

End card

An end card is the closing frame of a video ad — typically the logo, a tagline, and the CTA, held for a beat so the brand and next step register. It is what turns a nice clip into a finished ad. Hermoso composites end cards into renders automatically, toggle-able per video. See the AI video ad maker and faceless video ads.

Faceless video ad

A faceless video ad carries its message without a presenter on camera — product shots, screen recordings, text, and voiceover instead. It sidesteps casting and lets the product or offer lead, which suits ecommerce, apps, and creators who prefer to stay off camera. See the faceless video ad maker and the AI video ad maker.

Finished ad

A finished ad is creative that is ready to run — copy, captions, CTA, and brand end card already composited in — as opposed to a raw image or clip you still have to assemble. The distinction matters because most AI tools stop at a blank generation. Hermoso returns finished ads. See blank photo vs finished ad and AI image ads.

FOOH (fake out-of-home)

FOOH (fake out-of-home) is a video format that stages an impossible or oversized brand moment in a real-world setting — a giant product on a city street, say — made with VFX or AI rather than a real installation. Done well it reads as a viral spectacle. Learn the format in FOOH ads explained and the fake OOH playbook.

Hook rate

Hook rate is the share of viewers still watching a video ad after its first few seconds (often measured at the 3-second mark). It isolates how well the opening — the hook — stops the scroll, before the rest of the ad gets a chance. A low hook rate means the problem is the first frame, not the payoff. Test hooks fast with the AI video ad maker and UGC ad generator.

Iteration velocity

Iteration velocity is how quickly a team can produce, test, and replace ad creative. Because winners are found by testing many variations, and because creative fatigues, the speed of the loop — not the polish of any one ad — often decides performance. AI generation exists largely to raise it. See the AI video ad maker and agency tooling.

Lip-sync

Lip-sync is the technique of matching a speaker’s mouth movements to an audio track so an AI avatar or actor appears to genuinely say the words. Convincing lip-sync is what separates a believable talking-head ad from an obvious fake, and it is essential to UGC-style avatar creative. See the AI lip-sync generator and AI avatar generator.

Lookalike audience

A lookalike audience is a targeting group the ad platform builds by finding new users who resemble an existing source — your customers or high-value converters. It extends reach to people statistically likely to act like your best audience, though strong creative still decides whether they convert. Pair good targeting with finished ads from the AI Facebook ad generator.

MCP / agent access

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI agents call external tools. Agent access means an assistant like Claude or Cursor can drive a product directly — here, running ad research and rendering finished ads over an MCP server or CLI, with no clicking. Hermoso ships a 301-tool server listed in the official registry. See MCP & CLI.

Playbook

A playbook is a reusable recipe for a proven ad — the structure, beats, and casting of a format that has worked — captured so it can be re-run on a new product or brand. Playbooks turn one-off wins into repeatable output. Hermoso learns them from winning ads and your own results. See competitor ad research and UGC ads that convert.

Retargeting

Retargeting (or remarketing) shows ads to people who have already interacted with a brand — visited the site, added to cart, watched a video. Because these audiences are warmer, retargeting typically converts higher and needs creative that acknowledges the prior visit rather than reintroducing the brand. Produce that follow-up creative with the AI Facebook ad generator.

ROAS (return on ad spend)

ROAS (return on ad spend) is revenue divided by ad spend — a 4x ROAS means four dollars back for every dollar in. It is the headline profitability metric for a campaign or ad. Creative is the biggest lever on it: better ads lower cost per result and lift ROAS more than most targeting tweaks. Start from proven creative via competitor research and transparent pricing.

Static vs video ad

Static vs video ad is the choice between a still image and a moving clip. Statics are cheap and fast, load instantly, and win on clear offers or bold type; video holds attention longer and demonstrates a product in use. Most accounts run both and let results decide. Make either in Hermoso — AI image ads or the AI video ad maker.

Storyboard

A storyboard is the shot-by-shot plan of a video ad — each beat’s visual, on-screen text, and voiceover — laid out before rendering. It keeps a multi-shot ad coherent and lets you fix the structure before spending on generation. Hermoso plans a storyboard from your brief, then renders it. See the AI video ad maker and faceless video ads.

Swipe file

A swipe file is a saved collection of ads worth learning from — hooks, layouts, and offers you clip for reference and reuse. It is a marketer’s inspiration library and the starting point for the next round of creative. Hermoso lets you save ads from any research view into named collections. Build one from the ad spy tool and competitor research.

UGC ad

A UGC ad (user-generated-content ad) is creative made to look like an authentic post from a real person — handheld, unpolished, talking to camera — rather than a glossy brand spot. The casual style earns trust and tends to outperform on social feeds; AI avatars now produce it without a shoot. See the AI UGC ad generator and UGC ads that convert.

Whitelisting (creator / spark ads)

Whitelisting (also called creator or spark ads) is running paid ads through a creator’s own social handle with their permission, so the ad appears as a native post from someone the audience follows. It blends UGC authenticity with paid reach — and the creative still has to feel organic. Produce it with the TikTok ad generator and UGC ad generator.
